The Washington Post, May 20, 2004; Live!
By: Marianne Meyer

"Girls Wanna Rock." It's a song on the 2003 CD "Bad Girls," from Northern Virginia's all-female group the Sirens, but it's also quite obviously the band's motto. These four cool chicks -- Cindy Chambers, Tammy Hooper, Kristin Gray and Melissa Duncan -- have a no-nonsense, but still fun, style. "We play hard, we play fast, we play loud," Chambers said in a recent interview. . . Recently, the band played on a festival bill with lots of other, but quieter, female musicians, including gentle folkie-type Lisa Loeb. Guess which act did a blistering cover of a Black Sabbath tune? "We like the diversity," Chambers laughed, and she was talking as much about her band's wide-ranging audience as she was of the many sounds of women in music... Click here for the complete article.

The Sirens
Friday · The Cavern (Chicks RockFest)
If you were lucky enough to score the new No Thanks! Punk Rock box-set from Rhino Records this year from Santa, you were likely struck by how unabashedly new bands are copping that vintage Punk/Post-Punk style. Several of the songs on the historical collection could have been released last week and easily gotten into the rotation on 97X or Subterranean. Oddly, there's still something resoundingly fresh and inventive (well, "post-inventive") about new Post-Punk revivers, even after a refresher listen to old tracks from Joy Division, Gang of Four and The Pop Group. And if you're a stickler for imagination, it could be worse -- bands could be ripping off Warrant or something equally abhorrent. Washington, D.C.-based quartet, The Sirens, stir similar emotions, crafting a sound that is unquestionably derivative, yet still put together well enough to be effective. There's a history lesson's worth of name-checks one could come up with in describing the band's debut release, Bad Girls. Thanks to the band members' individual skills and their collective no-nonsense style, listening to Bad Girls fondly recalls multiple generations of female-fueled bands, from the rough-shod power of The Runaways, to early-period Blondie to smoother L7. A sense of humor only adds to the allure. On the fiery "Girls Wanna Rock," the band distills women-in-music issues into one bluntly effective statement, even doing some of their own name-checking: "Patti, Debbie, Wendy O/Joni, Chrissie, where'd ya go?" The Sirens might not be in those icons' ranks yet, but the band's sentiment -- and music -- would surely be appreciated and respected by each one of them. (Mike Breen)

THE SIRENS- Bad Girls independent

THE SIRENS are an all-female band from Washington DC. They exist for about two years now, and they sound like JOAN JETT ("Get Outta My Face") mixed with a touch of early BLONDIE, THE RUNAWAYS and THE RAMONES. Punk rock, with a melodic background. They come to party, and leave the crowd behind like a wrong out swab. Then they leave the club, searching for more victims. That's what 'Bad Girls' do, when they play in a band. In "Sixteen" we strongly hear the influences of THE RUNAWAYS. Their opening sentence is the first sentence of "Cherry Bomb", then they change the lyrics but the influence of the band is still around. THE SIRENS are Melissa Duncan on vocals, Cindy Chambers on guitar, Kristin Gray on bass and Tammy Hooper on drums, and all ten songs on this thirty minute debut album are self-written. A debut CD to be proud of and I think that their second album may become a real blast. So watch out for THE SIRENS ladies and gentlemen, you have been warned here! www.thesirensband.com. gives you all the information you need to know about the band.

Music Monthly, August, 2003, Volume 20, No. 8, Issue #227. Excerpt from The Wollan Report by Laurin Wollan
The Sirens hail from DC and they have mastered The Misfits crunch. Cindy Chambers is on the vocals and plays the guitar. Melissa Duncan is on the percussion and lead vocals. Kristin Gray is all over the bass and vocals like that wart is on Lemmy's face and Tammy Hooper is on the drums and vocals in perfect timing. The opening track, "Settle" would cause The Donna's plane to crash immediately if played at the appropriate volume. Bad Girls is the name of the disc and you should get it just to have it. Four women at once is both scary and fun. "Marlene" is awesome and resonates. Don't F*&K with this band, even if you'd really like it. It is hard to single out tunes so I will review the entire disc soon. It is just that damn good. I hope they hold it together, the world could use this energy for change. Their music destroys and strokes in simultaneity....

BAD GIRLS is every bit as good as I expected it to be. Catchy songs, witty lyrics, played with power, this is exactly the kind of music I love. Rock on - Joe

How do you spell relief from top 40 heartburn? S-I-R-E-N-S Rock and roll as it was meant to be: hard driving, angry at times, cynical, not without irony, and, the most important ingredient: unapologetic fun! This full length cd has some incredible original songs on it! Check it out, then go see them live!

The Sirens live up to their name. Attracting attention to their song while distracting one from anything else. Their energy is infectious, their sound is riveting.

CDBaby.com- Review by Mega Fan
The power of the guitar and drums is only part of this all-chick band's appeal. Have you listened to the lyrics?? Awesome, even hilarious storylines with a beat that doesn't quit. You may even find yourself singing "Evil Bitch" and "Get Outta My Face" at work. Would that be wrong?? No way!! I'm SOLD!!

CDBaby.com- Review by Cece
Girls Wanna Rock and these babes do it! The premier CD from The Sirens will blow your socks and/or fishnets off. Whether you're an old punk from the 70s like me, or just discovering the best form of rock-and-roll, this CD is for you. Many of the songs tell a story ("Marlene" for example) which makes the music more fun. This band is also not to be missed live.

CDBaby.com - Review by Sarah R.
If Joey Ramone were a babe... So, if the Ramones were babes - this is what they would've sounded like...only better! Great lyrics - great rhythm - great guitar solos. If you have anything by the Pretenders in your collection, you MUST have this CD!

Wammie Awards (2/04)
The Sirens were nominated for three 2003 WAMMIE awards by the Washington Area Music Association for New Artist, Debut Recording and Rock Recording categories. Although we didn't come home with any awards, we did get some press!

Maria Villafana of WashingtonPost.com says: On the ballot but missing out on a Wammie were several groups who should not go unnoticed... The all-female punkish-rock group the Sirens put out a fun album "Bad Girls," whose track "Settle" is a tongue-in-cheek lament that wails on the boredom of auditioning lovers. "You're not the one I wanted/ but I guess you'll do/ Until my true love comes/ I'll settle for you" -- maybe not the most poetic lines but certainly true. (Click here for the full article. )

We also got a mention in the print edition of the Washington Post. Check out the WAMMIE article in the Style section from the February 17, 2004 Washington Post.

Show in Cincinnati (1/04)
We're back from our first show in the midwest and we had an AWESOME time! We performed at the 4th Annual Chicks Rock Fest in Cincinnati, Ohio which showcased 30 bands from across the nation on 3 stages over 2 nights. We had the pleasure of opening the event on the Sam Ashe Mainstage at The Cavern. In addition, our song "Girls Wanna Rock" was used to help promote the Festival and was played on Cincinnati's main rock radio station, WEBN. "Girls Wanna Rock" was also selected as the first song for the event's compilation CD! If that's not enough good news, then here's some more: Our show was highlighted as "Gig of the Week" in the Cincinnati City Beat newspaper AND our CD "Bad Girls" was reviewed in City Beat!

We had an awesome time, heard some rockin' bands and met some amazing musicians. Great sets by our stagemates for the night Amp, The Honeys, Waterproof Blonde and Viania. We're looking forward to sharing the stage again with the many bands we connected with at the Festival. Many thanks to Jen Schmidt, the sound and stage crew, the merch volunteers and all the folks that helped make this a fabulous event. Click here to check out some pictures of us from the show and check our photos page soon for some more shots.
